Kościół pw świętego Szczepana i świętej Anny, Warsaw
Facts and practical information
Church of St. Stephen and St. Anne - a Roman Catholic baroque-classical parish church in Raszyn in the municipality of Raszyn.
It is a valuable monument of 17th-century architecture. It was founded by Zygmunt Opacki, the owner of Raszyn and Falenty. It was built in 1654, and consecrated in 1655. The temple survived turmoil, including the Swedish deluge.
Jozef Lukaszewicz makes such a note about the church : In 1603 this church was visited by Wawrzyniec Goślicki, the then bishop of Poznań. Raszyn belonged at that time to Jan Tarnowski, who died as archbishop of Gniezno. The church was wooden, dedicated to St. Stephen and St. Anne, and was in quite good condition. It contained four altars, but instead of a floor or a plaster floor it had, like most of parochial churches in the Warsaw archdiocese at that time, evenly compacted earth, probably clay. Apart from the manor in Raszyn, the church was endowed with tithes from the villages of Raszyn, Falenty małe, Gromnica Skoroszy, Michałowice, Pruchoł, Jeziorek, and Rybie. The church had been robbed of its silver in 1598 by thieves. After the Tarnowskis, Raszyn belonged to the Opateks, of Prus coat of arms, of whom Zygmunt Opacki, the chamberlain of Warsaw, who died in the Dorpatian voivodship, built a brick church in Raszyn instead of a wooden one and bequeathed 7,000 contemporary zlotys in 1635 for the maintenance of two mansions. His son Wojciech, chamberlain of Warsaw, starosta of Latowice, beautified the church built by his father and in 1680, when he passed away, he was buried in a family tomb in the church of Raszyn, where a brick monument was erected.
In the seventeenth century the building was enriched with a valuable interior decoration - a marble epitaph with a portrait of Olbracht Opacki, the son of Sigismund, who died in 1680. In the years 1790 and 1979 the church was rebuilt. The façade of Raszyn church is poorly decorated, but typical for the seventeenth century. Characteristic is the line dividing it into two symmetrical parts, running through the portal and the window illuminating the choir. The interior of the church is richly gilded and decorated with numerous paintings, statues and sculptures of saints. There is also a historic vicarage from the late 18th century.
