Wieża zamkowa
Facts and practical information
Castle Tower - part of the former castle of the Kamieński bishops, in the western part of Golczewo, on the isthmus between lakes: Szczuczym and Okoni, by the road number "108".
The castle of Kamieński bishops was built in two phases. The first is connected with the period before 1304, when Golczewo belonged to the knights Ekhard and Wulfekin Smelling and an unknown Wedelstedt. The agreement concluded by them with the bishop of Kamień Pomorski, Henryk Wachhnolz, started the process of development of the fortress, which became the property of the church. The castle was temporarily used by the chapter. Then it was administered by the Fleming family, who sold it in 1406 to Prince Bogusław VIII, a pretender to the position of bishop of Kamień Pomorski. The chapter took over the fortress again in 1436 and ruled it with a short break until 1534. From then on Golczewo was the property of the duke. After 1684 the castle was abandoned and was gradually destroyed. The preserved castle tower was renovated and its finial reconstructed in 1895 and 1929. After World War II, archaeological research was conducted under the direction of Tadeusz Nawrolski. They made it possible to determine the location of some elements of the medieval foundation.
At the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries a knight's residence was erected on a 3 m high mound. It consisted of an embankment and a brick house standing within the courtyard. The building was used and extended by the bishops of Kamień Pomorski. In the next phase, which probably took place between 1406 and 1418, the castle area was expanded and the foundation was given the shape of a quadrangle with dimensions of 40 x 40 m. The older buildings were demolished. A new knight's house with dimensions of about 12×25 m stood by the southern defensive wall. The southeastern corner was occupied by a free-standing cylindrical tower about 24 meters high. Its pedestal on a nearly square plan was built in the lower part from erratic boulders, and higher from brick. A prison dungeon was located in the underground part. The entrance to the tower was placed about 6 meters above the courtyard level, adjacent to the perimeter walls. There were mostly farm buildings, probably dating back to the modern times, e.g. the brewery to the east, the bakery and the gate building to the north.
