Kaplica „Na Wodzie” Świętego Józefa Robotnika w Ojcowie, Ojców National Park
Facts and practical information
Chapel "On the Water" - A chapel in Ojców in the Ojców National Park, at the foot of the rocks called Prałatki. It is a historic wooden religious building dedicated to St. Joseph the Craftsman.
It was built in 1901, on the site of the former Goplana spa baths. It was built on concrete foundations perched over two banks of the Prądnik stream. According to legend, the unusual location of the building was a result of circumventing the tsarist ban on building on the Father's land, so the chapel was built on water.
The chapel is maintained in the so-called Swiss-Father style. Elements of Alpine architecture are visible in the openwork tower-signature. However, the interior refers to the Zakopane style, fashionable in the early twentieth century. It has 3 altars in the shape of peasant cottage gables. In the main altar there is a symbolic sun, 5 saints and a picture of Our Lady of Help painted in 1901 by one of the "Goplana" patients. There are also patriotic elements; on the sides of the altar there are two eagles rising above three serpents. The eagles symbolize Poland, the 3 snakes the three invaders.
In front of the chapel there is a meadow called Goplana glade and St. John spring.
