Fantasporto, often referred to as Fantas, is a renowned international film festival that has been illuminating Porto, Portugal, annually since 1981. This festival is a sanctuary for aficionados of fantasy, science fiction, and horror films, while also embracing auteur films and experimental projects from around the world. With approximately 110,000 attendees each year, Fantasporto has solidified its place among the top 25 film festivals globally, as recognized by Variety.

What sets Fantasporto apart is its unique blend of public and private support. Despite being organized by a private entity, the festival benefits from substantial state funding, primarily from Portugal’s Ministry of Culture. The President of the Republic chairs the Honour Committee, and various private sponsors also contribute to the event's success.

The festival is distinguished by its prestigious awards. The premier accolade is the Grande Prémio Fantasporto (Best Film Award), but there are many other honors available, including the Jury’s Special Award, Best Direction, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Special Effects, and Best Short Film. Additional awards are given during Directors Week and for outstanding Portuguese cinema. Non-official awards, such as the International Fantasy Film Special Jury Award, Critic’s Award, and Audience Award, further heighten the excitement.

The Grande Prémio Fantasporto is particularly coveted and is awarded to the director of the best feature film in the official competition. Past winners include illustrious filmmakers like Vincenzo Natali and Guillermo del Toro. Other categories honor excellence in acting and screenwriting, with winners selected by the festival jury.
