Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Jesus, Lisbon
Facts and practical information
The Church of Nossa Senhora de Jesus, or the Parish Church of Nossa Senhora das Mercês, is located in Largo de Jesus in Lisbon. It is framed, in the same square, by the old building of the Convent of Nossa Senhora de Jesus, where the Academy of Sciences has been located since 1838, by the Passos Manuel High School, the Jesus Hospital and the Mendia Palace, among others.
The current church was built in the 18th century on the ruins of the previous church, destroyed by the 1755 earthquake.
With the end of the religious orders in Portugal in 1834, the church of the Convent of Nossa Senhora de Jesus is reconverted into the parish church of the Mercês parish, a role it plays to this day.
