Piton des Neiges
Facts and practical information
Piton des Neiges is an awe-inspiring natural landmark and the highest point on Réunion Island, a French territory located in the Indian Ocean. This dormant volcano soars to an altitude of 3,070 meters (10,069 feet) and is a central feature of the island's dramatic landscape. As the name suggests, which translates to 'Snow Peak' in English, its summit occasionally receives a dusting of snow, a rare and enchanting sight due to the island's tropical climate.
Formed over millions of years, Piton des Neiges is the primary reason for Réunion Island's existence, as its volcanic activity gave birth to the island itself. Although it has not erupted for over 12,000 years, it remains a focal point for geologists and volcanologists studying the natural history of the island and the Indian Ocean region.
For visitors and adventure enthusiasts, Piton des Neiges is a popular destination for trekking and mountaineering. The ascent to the summit is a challenging hike that rewards climbers with breathtaking panoramic views of the island and the surrounding ocean. The trek typically starts from one of the cirques - natural amphitheater-like valleys formed by the erosion of the volcano - and can take two days, with an overnight stay in one of the mountain's lodges or refuges.
As an integral part of Réunion's natural heritage, Piton des Neiges also lies at the heart of Réunion National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This park is celebrated for its rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems, including cloud forests and high-altitude heathlands, which are home to a variety of endemic species of flora and fauna.
