Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, Timișoara

The Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, dedicated to the Ascension of the Lord, is located in Timișoara's Unirii Square.

Due to the location of the church on the west-east axis, the church facade, located to the west, is towards 14 Emanoil Ungureanu Street, and the apse of the cathedral, located to the east, towards Unirii Square. Next to the place of worship is the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Timișoara, which is housed in a building with rich Baroque decorations, built between 1744 and 1747.

The former church of the Orthodox community of Timișoara perished in a fire in 1728. The new church was built between 1744 and 1748 in Baroque style with the help of donations from the faithful.

Initially this new church was built without the two towers, which were added in 1791 following a restoration. The two towers have five bells.

Until the middle of the 19th century, the church was used by the entire Orthodox community of the city, both Serbs and Romanians, but following the separation of the two churches, the Serbian Church in Dome Square remained with the Serbian community. The iconostasis is the work of the wooden sculptor Mihailo Janic and the Timisoara painter Constantin Daniel contributed to the icons.

Since 1964 the church has been declared a historical monument.
