Muzeul Național Secuiesc, Sfântu Gheorghe
Facts and practical information
The National Szekler Museum in Sfântu Gheorghe, Covasna county, was founded in 1875, with the declared purpose of researching and presenting the community and regional cultural memory of Szeklerland. Since 1879, the institution has become a public asset of the Szekler community. Today it operates as a regional museum financed by the Covasna County Council. In 1929, Alexandru Tzigara-Samurcaș, in his capacity as Inspector General of Museums in Romania, considered that of all the provincial museums in the Romanian countryside, besides those in Cluj, the one in Sf. Gheorghe is undoubtedly the most interesting and full of surprises...
Alexandru Tzigara-Samurcaș had an emotional connection with this museum, because in the First World War, King Ferdinand I of Romania sent him with the mandate to install a military guard at the National Szekler Museum, to save the collections that had begun to decay in the troubled circumstances of the conflagration. After the withdrawal of the Romanian troops, the Hungarian government sent the Romanian sovereign, through diplomatic channels, a letter of thanks, expressing its gratitude for saving the heritage of the museum, a letter that is preserved in the archives of the Museum in Sfântu Gheorghe.
On 15 June 1953, when the Archives Institution was established in Covasna County, as a unit subordinated to the Regional Service of the Mures Autonomous Hungarian Region of the State Archives, part of the funds were taken over by transfer from the District Museum.
