Castelul Mercy din Carani
Facts and practical information
Mercy Castle was built in 1733 - 1734, in the village of Carani in Banat and is declared a historical monument, with LMI code TM-II-m-A-06192.
Its name comes from Count Claudius Florimund Mercy, born in Lorraine, appointed governor of Banat after the Peace of Passarowitz, when the Ottoman Empire agreed to cede the conquered territories to the Habsburg Empire. Count Mercy, who also had a palace in Timișoara, built a secondary residence at Carani.
More than likely, Count Florimund Mercy never lived in the castle, as he died in 1734, the year the castle was completed.
After 1948, the castle in Carani was nationalized and transformed into the headquarters of the local C.A.P. a function that was maintained until 1989.
After 1989, the castle was returned to an heir in Austria, who did not take care of it, so that today it has become a ruin.
