Turnul Alb, Brașov
Facts and practical information
Built between 1460 and 1494, the White Tower still impresses today with the massiveness and slenderness of its architectural lines. Summing up its architecture in data we can say: open semicircular plan; more than 30 m difference in level from the city walls; height: 20 m towards the city and 18 m towards the hill; the walls have a base of 4 m and the tower's diameter measures 19 m. Along its walls, the tower has ramparts, tar pits and balconies supported by stone-hewn brackets. The tower is 59 m away from the fortress wall and is connected to it by a drawbridge linking the tower to the Graft Bastion. It overlooked Blumăna and, with its 5 floors, was the highest fortification in Brasov. Inside the tower, the chimney above a stained-glass window has been preserved, which could also be used to heat the guards and defenders - the guards of the guilds and the armorers. In 1678, the guild of pewterers redeemed the obligation to defend the tower, as the number of craftsmen had decreased. During the great fire of 21 April 1689, the fire carried by a strong wind also engulfed the White Tower, which burned down and was not renovated until 1723. Further restoration work was carried out in 1902, 1974, 2002 and 2005-2006. Today it has a museum point.
