When Is the Best Time To Visit Romania?

The answer to the question of what is the best month to visit Romania depends on what you are interested in doing during your stay. Here you can see an overview of each month and its typical weather conditions.

Tourist Season in Romania

Romania is best visited during the summer months between June and August. Sunny and warm days encourage relaxation both on the beaches of the Black Sea coast and in the lowlands and mountainous areas. This is the best time for sightseeing, beachcombing and hiking.

The spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) months are also relatively good times to visit Romania. Admittedly, the temperature is no longer as high as in the summer, and there may also be fleeting rains and thunderstorms, but you can still count on plenty of sunshine, especially in May and September.

The winter months (November through March) are outside the tourist season. It is then much colder and more humid. In places, there are severe frosts and snowfall that can make travel very difficult. Many tourist attractions are inaccessible to tourists during this time. In the higher parts of the mountains, the ski season is underway.

April - May

The spring months are a good time for those who shy away from the heat and are more focused on sightseeing than beachcombing. In most areas of the country, the air temperature fluctuates between 20°C and 23°C, and there may also be fleeting rainfall and thunderstorms. It's not perfect weather for sunbathing and swimming in the sea, which is still too cold for bathing, but it's ideal for hiking, sightseeing and touring. Nature is awakening to life, everything is turning green and bewitching with an abundance of blooming flowers. At the end of May you can watch migrating birds in the Danube Delta. In the spring, thermal springs in the spas (including Băile Felix and Băile 1 Mai) are also available.

The summer months - the warmest and driest of the year - are the peak of the tourist season. Sunny and hot days encourage all forms of recreation, from beachcombing and swimming to hiking and high mountain climbing. The pillar of the mercury reaches 30°C, and sometimes even reaches 35°C, which can be a bit oppressive. It is then worthwhile to relax on the Black Sea coast, where the heat is not so annoying thanks to the cool sea breeze. Summer resorts are bustling with activity, and thermal springs at spas are also available.

September - October

The autumn months bring cooling and increased rainfall throughout the country. In September, air and sea temperatures still allow for beachcombing and swimming, but in October it is already too cold for this form of recreation. This time is definitely better for organizing sightseeing tours, and nature shimmering with autumn colors makes hiking more pleasant. You can enjoy thermal baths, which are usually year-round.

The winter months can often be cold and snowy, especially in upland and mountainous areas. This period is outside the main tourist season. Most Black Sea resorts are closed as are many other tourist attractions (museums, castles, open-air museums and caves). Due to the inclement weather, most high mountain roads are closed due to heavy snowfall, and it may be difficult or even impossible to reach some places. The Transfogaraska Route is closed from October to May, and some sections of the Transalpina Route are also closed.

The ski season is underway in the higher parts of the mountains, and winter sports can usually be enjoyed from December to April. Resorts (including Poiana Brasov, Busteni, Predeal and Sinaia) provide ski slopes with lifts and cable cars for both beginners and advanced skiers.
