Romania lies in a temperate continental climate zone. Significant influences on the formation of climatic differences between the various regions are the large variation in area and the presence of the Carpathian Mountains.
The high mountain region, which includes areas of the Carpathian Mountains lying above 1,800 meters above sea level, is characterized by an alpine climate. Winter temperatures average -10°C and below, while summer temperatures do not exceed 10°C. Annual precipitation oscillates around 1,400 mm, with rain in summer and snow in winter. In the higher parts of the mountains, snow cover persists for about 100 days.
