The Sakhalin Regional State Art Museum is one of the youngest museums in Russia and the only art museum in the Sakhalin region. The first floor of the museum is intended for exhibition work. The art museum shows exhibitions from the world's leading museums, personal exhibitions of contemporary artists, and exhibitions from the museum's own collection. On the second floor are permanent exhibitions: "Contemporary Art of Korea", "Applied and Decorative Art of Japan", "Russian Art of XIX - n.e. XX century", "Modern Russian Art", "Fine Arts of Hungary", "Dance Theatre of Hungary", "Modern Russian Art". XX c."
Employees of the museum are engaged in research activities. More than 50 scientific articles, catalogs and monographs were published. The museum conducts a great scientific and educational work. Traditional forms of this work are excursions, lectures, classes involving exhibits from the museum's collections. The "Russian Tea Party" ceremony, which is held by the museum employees for different categories of the population of the Sakhalin region and guests of Sakhalin, has become popular. For more than 15 years, the Museum has been running the "School of Perception" for children aged 3-6.
The museum was founded in 1983 by order of the Ministry of Culture of the RSFSR, the exposition was opened on March 25, 1989.
