The Sakhalin Regional Museum of Local History is the central museum of the Sakhalin region. The museum was founded in 1896 by the military governor of Sakhalin D. V. Merkazin. Currently occupies a Japanese building from 1937, built in the traditional national style of Teikan-zukuri, the only one of its kind in the territory of both Sakhalin and the whole of Russia.
