Alexander Column, Saint Petersburg
Facts and practical information
The Alexander Column, a grand memorial situated in the heart of Saint Petersburg, stands as a testament to Russia's military triumphs. Located in Palace Square, adjacent to the Winter Palace, this monumental column was erected in 1834 to commemorate Russia's victory over Napoleon's France in the Patriotic War of 1812.
Dominating the square with its imposing height of 47.5 meters (155 feet), the Alexander Column is named after Emperor Alexander I, who reigned during the time of the victory. The monolith is fashioned from a single piece of red granite, making it one of the largest of its kind in the world. It is so well balanced that it stands solely by its own weight without any attachments to the base, a testament to the engineering marvels of the 19th century.
Atop the column, a statue of an angel holding a cross represents the triumph of peace over war, while the angel's face is said to bear the features of Alexander I. The base of the column is decorated with symbols of military glory and inscriptions commemorating the Russian victory.
Despite its monumental size, the Alexander Column was remarkably erected in a mere two hours without the aid of modern cranes, a feat that remains impressive to this day. It was designed by the French-born architect Auguste de Montferrand, who is also known for his work on the nearby Saint Isaac's Cathedral.
The Alexander Column is not only a memorial but also a central gathering place in the city. It has witnessed numerous historical events and serves as a popular meeting point for locals and tourists alike. The column is an integral part of the architectural ensemble of Palace Square, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
