Gorky Museum, Moscow

Nestled in the heart of Moscow, the Gorky Museum stands as a testament to the life and works of the acclaimed Russian writer Maxim Gorky. Situated in a stunning Art Nouveau mansion, the museum offers visitors a glimpse into the opulent world of early 20th-century Russian nobility as well as the Soviet era's cultural landscape.

The mansion, designed by architect Fyodor Schechtel, was originally built for the wealthy Ryabushinsky family in 1903 and features an exquisite interior complete with a grand staircase, intricate stained-glass windows, and ornate wood carvings. After the Ryabushinskys fled Russia following the 1917 Revolution, the mansion was appropriated by the state and later became Gorky's residence when he returned to the Soviet Union in 1932 at the invitation of Joseph Stalin.

The Gorky Museum celebrates the life of the "father of socialist realism" by preserving his personal belongings, manuscripts, and library. Visitors can explore the writer's study, where he penned some of his most famous works, and the living quarters that hosted many prominent figures of the time, including Soviet officials and foreign dignitaries.
