Facts About Cape grysbok
The Cape, or Southern Grysbok, is a small antelope native to the Western Cape region of South Africa. It has a coarse, reddish-sandy coat speckled with white flecks. These diminutive creatures stand about 21 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh around 20 pounds. Males have short horns, and their tails are so short they are almost invisible.
Cape Grysboks make their homes in the Fynbos biome and dense shrublands but occasionally venture into orchards and vineyards. They are territorial and predominantly nocturnal. Remarkably, they can survive long periods without drinking water.
The breeding season for the Cape Grysbok occurs during the southern summer. After approximately six months of gestation, a single lamb is born.
A similar species, Sharpe's Grysbok, is found in southeastern Africa. One distinguishing feature is that Sharpe's Grysbok has "false hooves" located above their fetlocks.
