Facts About Southwestern water vole
The southwestern water vole, also known as the southern water vole, is a large, semi-aquatic rodent found in parts of France, Spain, and Portugal. This species is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. For a long time, it was thought to be the same as the European water vole, but recent research has demonstrated that it is distinct enough to be classified as its own species.
Much like its northern relative, the southwestern water vole faces threats that are endangering its population. Efforts to protect this species are ongoing, with initiatives at both the national level and within the European Union.
Interestingly, this vole was once a traditional ingredient in the famous Valencian dish, paella. However, contemporary recipes no longer include it.
