Castell de Llívia, Llívia
Facts and practical information
The castle of Llivia is located at the top of the Puig del Castell, at the foot of which the town of Llivia was erected, in the region of Lower Cerdanya. Although the castle was destroyed by the French King Louis XI at the end of the Catalan civil war against John II in 1479, some remains have been preserved. The dating of the visible remains could be from the 12th century as the most probable date.
The castle is characterised by being a sovereign or stately enclosure formed, apparently, by a rectangular keep with four circular turrets - one at each vertex - and a jussà enclosure where there was the town, which surrounds and encloses it. Inside the first enclosure, there was a cistern covered with a barrel vault that is still preserved. The wall was reinforced by rectangular towers on the walls and circular towers at the corners.
Recently, some important archaeological surveys have been carried out. Given the poor state of the access road, a hot-air balloon was used to take the prospecting material up to the castle.
