Torre d'aigües de Macosa, Barcelona
Facts and practical information
The Besós Water Tower is a building in the city of Barcelona. It was built in the 1880s by architect Pere Falqués, commissioned by the industrialist Xavier Camps. Its original function was to supply water to the city. After having also belonged to the company Can Girona, it now serves as a lookout point, with 303 steps.
In 2012 it was one hundred and thirty years since the inauguration of the Torre de les Aigües del Besòs, a business initiative of the late nineteenth century, which sought to harness the underground flow of the Besòs River for human consumption, which ultimately did not meet the expectations of its promoters and failed within a few years. However, a magnificent tower of the company is still preserved and is now part of the collective imagination of the inhabitants of Barcelona's Poblenou neighbourhood.
