Torre de Ruerrero

Facts and practical information
The Tower of Ruerrero, in the municipality of Valderredible, was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1992. It is located in the fields of the village of Ruerrero, on the top of a hill, which can be reached from the highest part of the village.
It is a watchtower from the late Middle Ages, built in the 14th-15th centuries.
It is a square tower that measures about 10 and a half metres on each side and reaches a height of 12-13 metres. The wall is very wide, more than two metres, and is formed by two ashlar stone walls in the middle of which there is a chamber filled with rubble. There are openings on all the façades except the eastern façade, the most outstanding being the twin window with semicircular arches on the southern façade. The southwest corner has collapsed. It had two floors and remains of its beams are still preserved.
Its most original element is a truncated cone-shaped tower attached to the northwest corner, which acts as a buttress. Its dimensions are 3 meters in diameter and 5 meters high.
Around it there must have been a moat, of which there are remains on the eastern side of the tower, with dimensions of about three metres wide, which is not a very frequent element in the towers of southern Cantabria.
