Basílica de la Virgen del Camino
Facts and practical information
The Basílica Menor y Real Santuario de la Virgen del Camino is located in the town of La Virgen del Camino, belonging to the municipality of Valverde de la Virgen, in the province of León. It is dedicated to the Virgen del Camino, patron saint of the region of León and the city of Pamplona, and is located on the route of the Camino de Santiago, from which it gets its name. The current basilica was built between 1957 and 1961 by the architect Fray Coello de Portugal to replace a previous sanctuary that had become too small to accommodate all the parishioners and pilgrims. Its construction was financed in part thanks to the León patron Pablo Diez, owner of Grupo Modelo, a multinational beer company from Mexico. It is governed by the Dominican Order, who promoted a modern style church, both in its architecture and in its sculptural decoration.
In 2015, in the approval by Unesco of the extension of the Way of St. James in Spain to "Ways of St. James of Compostela: French Way and Ways of Northern Spain", Spain sent as documentation a "Retrospective Inventory - Associated Components" in which the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Way appears in No. 1683.
