Castillo de Villaviciosa

Villaviciosa Castle is a fortress located in the village of the municipality of Solosancho de Villaviciosa, in the province of Ávila, Castile and León, Spain. It is located in the same mountain range as the Castle of Manqueospese. It was built in two different stages. In the 15th century, Nuño González del Águila y Guzmán had it built in order to guard the passage from the Valley of Amblés to the Sierra de la Paramera. It has a rectangular enclosure with inverted keyhole loopholes, escorted by a keep, and a slender cylindrical tower 14 metres high in the southeast corner.
In the second period of construction, in the 16th century, the Torre de las Damas was built, which is an apse-shaped projection with small sentry boxes. This tower has two watchtowers, a Plateresque window decorated with a semicircular arch with a veneration in the tympanum on columns, with an iron grille, and flanked by the coats of arms of Nuño González del Águila y Guzmán and his wife Teresa Velasco y Guevara. Over the whole, another coat of arms, this time of the surname Dávila. Nowadays, the Castle of Villaviciosa is a hotel.
