Mare de Déu de la Posa
Facts and practical information
The Church of the Virgin of La Posa is a sanctuary in the municipality of Isona and Conca Dellá, belonging to the former municipality of Isona. It is located just over two and a half kilometres in a straight line, in an east-northeast direction from the centre of the town of Isona, and about four kilometres along the road that provides access. This path starts at kilometre point 3.3 of the L-511 road, just where the turning to the north of the local road leading to Abella de la Conca is. Almost opposite the Isona turnoff is the start of a track, signposted, to the south, which leads in one kilometre to l'Obac de la Posa, where the sanctuary of the Virgin and, in front of it, a field of slit tracks.
Religious centre of the old municipality of Isona, it was not only a sanctuary where once a year a pilgrimage was held, but it was also the scene of many of the popular festivals. It even marked the date of the old Isona town festival, which was held on the day of the Virgins found, as is the case of the Virgin of La Posa.
There is not much news, throughout history: the first document that mentions it is from the XVIIth century. Although there is a Romanesque apse from the 11th century or the first years of the 12th century, made with a very regular apparatus. The rest of the building is of a later construction, rebuilt at various times throughout the ages. However, at the base of the foundations there is a Roman tombstone, probably from Isona.
A particularity of the last century is that this sanctuary was, like the whole of Isona, the scene of a long and hard battle of the civil war, throughout the whole of 1938. A sample is in the Virgin of the Posa: in the belfry, and as a bell, is a fragment of recycled shell for the service call to the temple.
