Esquileo de Santillana
Facts and practical information
The Casa de Esquileo de Santillana located in Revenga, was ordered to be built by Ignacio de Arizcun, who obtained a license in 1744 from King Philip V.
The municipality of Revenga, rich in pastures and crossed by the ravine, made Revenga an eminently cattle-raising place. In the middle of the 18th century there were three shearing ranches with a capacity to shear 77,000 sheep a year. The most important was the one built around 1745 by the Marquis of Iturbieta, which is known as the Santillana shearing shed due to its proximity to the ancient inn of the same name, which was destroyed in 1808.
Given the proximity of the inn, wine, grain or other foodstuffs could not be sold here, so that there would be no competition between the two establishments. The marquis, like other nobles from Madrid who were well connected at court, owned more than 40,000 head of transhumant sheep which were all sheared here.
