Iglesia de San Esteban
Facts and practical information
The church of San Esteban is a temple of Catholic worship located in the municipality of Nieva, in the province of Segovia.
Built in the 13th century, its construction is a mixture of Romanesque and Mudejar styles, visible mainly in the porticoed gallery at the main entrance, which combines brick arches and pillars with Romanesque stone columns.
It consists of a single nave, in which the walls of the presbytery show Mudejar decoration composed of folded arches, separated by an alfiz, and on them six rectangles. The nave is presided over by a semicircular apse, of Mudejar style, decorated with three floors of blind and folded arches, topped with a frieze of angled bricks and three rows of bricks forming the eaves. Its northern doorway, made up of four archivolts, also corresponds to the Mudejar style.
The tower is located as a dome over the nave; it has a rectangular plan and is arranged with two bodies of bells. Finally, the porticoed gallery is located on the main façade, where the capitals of the columns are interesting, in which griffins, dragons and other creatures appear.
