Muralla romana, León
Facts and practical information
The city wall of León is the Roman fortification of the Spanish city of León that delimits the old part of the city.
The walled complex of León is formed by the Roman walls, whose origin dates back to the 1st century, by the fences or medieval walls, from the 14th century, and by the castle of León, nowadays the seat of the provincial historical archive. The walls were built by the Legio VI to control the Asturian population in the area and rebuilt by the Legio VII in stone in 74 AD. The first major reform was carried out in the Tetrarchic period, still under Roman rule.
The repopulation of the city in the 9th century by the kingdom of Asturias led to the repair of the walls using the methods of the time. The first extension, on land, to the south of the city was carried out due to the increase of the hamlet outside the walls, something that would eventually lead Alfonso XI to order the construction of fences to protect the new burgh.
