Iglesia del Salvador, Valladolid
Facts and practical information
The Church of the Most Holy Savior, or simply El Salvador, is a Catholic parish church located in the Spanish city of Valladolid, capital of the province of the same name, community of Castile and León.
According to tradition, Saint Pedro Regalado, patron saint of Valladolid, was baptised in 1390 in the baptismal font kept in this church. The chapel dedicated to him inside the church is one of the focal points of veneration of this saint, whose feast day has been celebrated here every 13th May since the middle of the 18th century.
This parish church of El Salvador must have been erected in the 12th century, because, although there are ancient historians such as Manuel Canesi who date its foundation in 1336, other more modern historians such as Matías Sangrador and Juan Agapito y Revilla assure that there are documents that already mention it at the end of the 12th century and in 1208. Of its primitive factory there is practically nothing left, since the present building was started to be built at the end of the 15th century.
The highlight of this church is an exceptional Flemish triptych dating from around 1502, which is in the chapel dedicated to San Juan Bautista, completed in 1492. Also noteworthy is the Renaissance façade at the foot, from the 16th century, with beautiful proportions and good sculptures and a tower of great prestige, built during the 17th and 18th centuries.
