Colegiata de Santa María
Facts and practical information
The collegiate church of Santa María del Cluniaco, Coruniego or Cruñego located in the town of Villafranca del Bierzo, in the region of El Bierzo had its origins in a Benedictine monastery erected in the 12th century, with an annexed hostelry to serve the French pilgrims who passed through Villafranca del Bierzo, on their way to Compostela. The remains of this ancient abbey have been lost, hidden by the modern collegiate church.
In 2015, in the approval by Unesco of the extension of the Way of St. James in Spain to "Ways to Santiago de Compostela: French Way and Ways of Northern Spain", Spain sent as documentation a "Retrospective Inventory - Associated Components" in which the collegiate church of Santa María appears in No. 1886.
