Facts About Fejervarya limnocharis
Fejervarya limnocharis, commonly known as Boie's wart frog, the rice field frog, or the Asian grass frog, is a species native to Southeast Asia and parts of Indochina. Recent molecular studies suggest that what has been identified as Fejervarya limnocharis may actually comprise a group of closely related species.
These frogs can be easily identified by their pointed snouts, distinct tympanums (external hearing structures), and unique color patterns. In Malaysia, they are often found in oil palm plantations.
There has been some confusion in their identification, particularly in South Asia, where they were initially misidentified. It appears likely that records of Fejervarya limnocharis outside their known range actually pertain to different species.
In Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, Fejervarya limnocharis is a popular food source. In Cambodia, they are frequently collected for consumption along with other frog species such as Hoplobatrachus rugulosus and Glyphoglossus molossus.
