Jaffna Fort, Jaffna

Jaffna Fort stands as a sentinel to the rich history of Jaffna, a city located on the northern tip of Sri Lanka. This formidable fortification is a testament to the city's strategic importance and colonial past. Built by the Portuguese in 1618, and later expanded by the Dutch during their occupation of the region, Jaffna Fort is one of the best-preserved remnants of colonial military architecture in the country.

Its thick walls, bastions, and ramparts are spread over an area of 22 hectares, making it one of the most extensive forts in Sri Lanka. Today, Jaffna Fort is a significant archaeological and tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the remnants of the barracks, ammunition stores, and administrative buildings. The fort's ramparts offer panoramic views of the city and the lagoon, making it a popular spot for sightseeing and photography. Notably, the fort's Kruys Church, built by the Dutch, is one of the oldest surviving Protestant churches in Sri Lanka.

Restoration efforts have been undertaken to preserve this historical monument, ensuring that it continues to tell the story of Jaffna's past.
