Västerås Stadsbibliotek, Västerås
Facts and practical information
Västerås City Library, formerly called Västerås Diocesan and National Library, was inaugurated on 10 February 1956 after decades of discussion. The main library is housed in a building designed by Sven Ahlbom that houses reading rooms, an auditorium, a music department and a children's library.
The library had its origins in the school and diocesan library and the collection grew considerably in the early 17th century through the personal interest of Bishop Johannes Rudbeckius. Today's collections were started as a merger of these with the Library of the Labour Institute, the ABF Library.
Västerås City Library consists of a main library, six branches, a bookmobile and a website.
Västerås City Library is also the county library for Västmanland County.
