Tanum Rock Carving Museum, is an information and documentation centre for the Tanum World Heritage Area. The museum records and documents rock carvings and archives material related to the rock carvings.
Tanum Rock Carving Museum is a private museum, run by the Scandinavian Society for Prehistoric Art. It is a non-profit and independent society with the aim of broadening knowledge of and promoting future research and cooperation on Scandinavian prehistoric art through documentation, exhibitions, courses, training in documentation techniques and publishing activities.
The museum's exhibition provides an introduction to ancient iconography. The museum also organises courses and guided tours in the rock carving area and international training courses in field documentation. Opening hours are May to October, 10.00-17.00.
Northern Bohuslän is the area with the highest density of petroglyphs in Sweden, of which Tanums parish is the most prominent. The petroglyphs in the area date to the Bronze Age, with a predominance in the latter half of the period and the early Iron Age. The rock carvings in the area are included on the UN World Heritage List.
