Church of St. Matthew, Lucerne
Facts and practical information
St. Matthew's Church is a church building of the Evangelical Reformed Church Parish of Lucerne at 30 Hertensteinstrasse in Lucerne, Switzerland.
After repeated reformatory awakenings, all of which were suppressed, it took until the 19th century for a reformed congregation to emerge in Lucerne.
The Prussian King Frederick William III and the Estates of Zurich and Bern each donated a precious communion chalice to the church foundation in 1827. Not only German, but also English vacationers thereafter repeatedly urged the construction of a church.
The owner of the hotel "Schweizerhof" provided a suitable plot of land next to the hotel, on which St. Matthew's Church was built in 1860/1861 in the neo-Gothic style according to plans by Ferdinand Stadler.
The composer Richard Wagner, who lived in Lucerne from 1866 to 1872, was married here on August 25, 1870 in his second marriage to Cosima von Bülow.
