Niesen
Facts and practical information
Niesen, known as the "Swiss Pyramid" due to its distinctive, almost perfectly pyramidal shape, is a towering mountain located in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland. With its summit at 2,362 meters above sea level, Niesen offers awe-inspiring views of the surrounding landscape, including the deep blue waters of Lake Thun and the neighboring peaks.
The mountain is a popular destination for hikers, nature enthusiasts, and those looking for a serene escape. To accommodate visitors, the Niesenbahn funicular railway was constructed, which has been transporting guests from the base at Mülenen to the summit since 1910. The journey reveals increasingly stunning vistas as one ascends the steep mountainside.
Atop Niesen, visitors can indulge in the panoramic scenery from the spacious observation deck or enjoy a meal at the mountain-top restaurant, which provides a scenic dining experience. The summit also serves as a starting point for various hiking trails, offering routes for all levels of experience.
Niesen is not only a daytime excursion; it also hosts a series of events throughout the year, including the famous Niesen Stairway Run, where athletes compete by racing up the 11,674 steps that run alongside the funicular – the longest staircase in the world.
