Dufourspitze
Facts and practical information
Dufourspitze, Switzerland's apex, crowns the majestic Monte Rosa Massif as the highest peak in the Swiss Alps and the second-highest in the entire Alps and Western Europe. Soaring to an impressive 4,634 meters (15,203 feet), this mountain commands respect and admiration from mountaineers and nature enthusiasts alike.
Named after the Swiss general and topographer Guillaume-Henri Dufour, who co-created the Dufour Map – the first topographical survey of Switzerland – Dufourspitze is a beacon of alpine challenge and beauty. It is part of the Monte Rosa Massif, which straddles the Swiss-Italian border, offering climbers not just a physical quest but also breathtaking panoramic views that stretch across the surrounding peaks and valleys.
The ascent to Dufourspitze is a demanding venture, typically approached through the Monte Rosa Hut, a state-of-the-art eco-friendly base for climbers. The route is adorned with glaciers, steep snow slopes, and rocky ridges, requiring technical skill and acclimatization to altitude.
Despite its ruggedness, Dufourspitze remains a coveted destination for experienced alpinists. The reward at the summit is a vista that encompasses the Matterhorn, Liskamm, and numerous other peaks, providing a truly unforgettable alpine experience.
