Facts About Taiwan Rice Frog
Meet the Microhyla heymonsi, commonly referred to as the dark-sided chorus frog or Taiwan rice frog. This diminutive species of narrow-mouthed frog is indigenous to a diverse geographic range extending from northeastern India and southern China to Taiwan and Southeast Asia, reaching as far as the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and the Great Nicobar Island.
Initially identified in Taiwan, the Microhyla heymonsi is a member of the microhylid family. These frogs are notably small, with males measuring only 16 to 21 mm, and females slightly larger at 22 to 26 mm in length from snout to vent. They exhibit a distinctive appearance, characterized by pinkish or greyish dorsal coloring and a prominent black band that runs from the tip of their snout to their groin, completely covering the sides of their heads.
