North Gate of Taipei, New Taipei City
Facts and practical information
The North Gate of Taipei City, formally known as Cheng'en Gate or simply North Gate, is a Qing Dynasty gate building located in the Zhongzheng District of Taipei City, Taiwan, and is the main gate of Taipei City. Located at the intersection of Zhongxiao West Road, Yanping South Road and Boai Road in present-day Taipei City, it was completed in the tenth year of the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. The gate was originally built with an urn outside, but no longer exists today. It is now declared a National Monument of the Republic of China, along with other gates in Taipei's capital city.
The Beimen Viaduct, which was opened in 1978, passed right next to the Beimen Gate, causing it to be severely overshadowed visually. In view of this, the Taipei City Government launched the "Western District Gateway Project" in 2015, making the reorganization of the landscape of the North Gate one of its key projects. In early 2016, the North Gate Viaduct was dismantled and a plaza-like open space was created around the gate, with the hope of transforming the North Gate into the "Gate of the Nation" and becoming a historical landmark of Taipei.
