Wat Umong, Chiang Mai

Nestled in the lush forests on the outskirts of Chiang Mai, Thailand, Wat Umong is a unique and tranquil temple that offers visitors a glimpse into the spiritual heritage of Northern Thailand. Known for its ancient tunnel complex, this 13th-century temple stands as a testament to the region's rich history and Buddhist traditions.

The most distinctive feature of Wat Umong is its series of tunnels from which the temple derives its name; "Umong" in Thai means "tunnel." These passageways were originally constructed to provide a quiet and secluded environment for meditation. The walls of the tunnels are adorned with fading paintings and Buddhist images, creating a serene atmosphere that captivates visitors.

Above ground, the temple complex is surrounded by a moat and is home to a large stupa, an open-air meditation area, and several Buddha statues that are scattered throughout the forest.
