Trinity Cathedral, Sumy
Facts and practical information
The Council of the Holy Trinity - Orthodox Council of Sums, in the Sumian Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.
Bishop Filaret wrote about the existence of the church under this call before 1735. The new temple was funded by Mikhail and Pawa Lintwariews in 1827, donating to the purpose of building 17,200 rubles with silver. There were three altars in the facility - the main Holy Trinity and Saint. Michał and Saint. Teodor Czernihowski.
In the years 1901–1914, on the initiative of Paweł Charitonienka, a new council was erected in the vicinity of the nineteenth -century church under the same call. The founder donated half a million rubles to the construction and wanted the new temple to surpass all the Orthodox sacred objects existing in the sums, and the inspiration for its appearance was the Council of Saint. Isaac in St. Petersburg. Charitonienko invited Aleksiej Szczusiewo to perform the project, but this one, because of many orders, did not accept the proposal, but prepared for the Council only a plan of mosaic decoration on the floor and fence. The basic work on the temple's project was carried out by engineer G. Szolc, an architect working in catfish.
Due to the economic crisis in Russia, at the beginning of the 20th century, P. Charitonienko was in serious problems, so that the work on the construction of the temple was suspended. Ultimately, the founder did not take place and the Council could be completed. Wishing the church he funded to match the beauty of the Council of St. Włodzimierz in Kiev, Charitonienko invited to write icons to the iconostasis Mikhail Niestierowa, who made the images of Christ, Mother of God, the Holy Trinity, Archangels Gabriel and Michał and Saint. Nicholas. The iconostasis of the Council in the sums did not survive: its marble design never arrived from Italy, where it was performed, to the destination, and the non -network icons were destroyed after the October Revolution. The bells for the Council were created in the Samgin studio in Moscow. The frescoes in the interior of the church were made by N. Niwinski, a painter from Moscow, and the stained glass window was made with the image of the Holy Trinity by Kuźma Pietrow-Wodkin from St. Petersburg.
In the USSR, the Cathedral in sums was picked up and adapted to the concert hall with the organs and the sculpture museum. After 1991, the building was returned to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.
