Facts About Sunderland International Airshow
The Sunderland International Airshow is Europe's largest free annual airshow, drawing approximately 2 million spectators each year to the picturesque Roker and Seaburn seafronts. Typically held over the final weekend of July, this three-day event is a marquee attraction for both aviation enthusiasts and families.
One of the main attractions of the airshow is its impressive lineup of aircraft, often featuring captivating displays by the Red Arrows and the formidable Eurofighter Typhoon. However, there's more to enjoy than aerial spectacles. The seafront buzzes with food stalls, games, and fairground attractions, offering diverse entertainment for all ages. Additionally, the Royal Navy frequently anchors a warship, such as the HMS Ocean, offshore, further enhancing the spectacle.
The airshow boasts a rich history. It began as a single-day event in 1989, expanded to two days in 1991, and has since grown into a three-day extravaganza. The journey hasn’t always been smooth, with the show canceled in 2008 due to fog and again in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
One of the event’s standout features is the Friday night launch, marked by mesmerizing sunset displays, gliders adorned with sparklers, and a breathtaking fireworks finale.
For years, Newcastle International Airport served as the main base for the aircraft, with a brief switch to Tees Valley Airport from 2007 to 2014. In 2007, the organizers collaborated with Gentoo and CarbonNeutral North East to reduce and offset the airshow’s carbon footprint, even establishing a Green Village with environmental stalls.
Over the years, the Sunderland International Airshow has showcased a variety of incredible performances. Highlights have included the Red Arrows, Eurofighter Typhoon, Black Cats (Royal Navy), Harrier GR9, The Blades aerobatic team, F-16, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, RAF Falcons, Royal Marines Role Demonstration, RAF Chinook Display Team, Eastern Airways BAe Jetstream 41, and the iconic Catalina, among others.
Whether you're an aviation aficionado or simply in search of a fun family outing, the Sunderland International Airshow promises an unforgettable experience.
