It is the mother church of this city with its forerunners spanning back to the first Saxon settlements of the 7th century, including a major collegiate church of the European Middle Ages dedicated to the same patron saint. Its name has been used nearby for major street names and in St Mary's Stadium, the city's largest sports stadium. Parts of the church date to the 1880s. ()
