Values of Civilization

The "Values of Civilization" sculpture group is a captivating public art installation created by American artist Alexander Doyle. Located in the rotunda of the Indiana State House in Indianapolis, this collection features eight monumental sculptures, each representing a fundamental pillar of society: Agriculture, Art, Commerce, History, Justice, Law, Liberty, and Oratory.

Crafted from exquisite Carrara marble in Italy during the late 1880s, each sculpture is a masterwork of detail and symbolism. The pieces were meticulously designed and carved overseas to economize on costs, and they were transported to the United States in 1888. Upon their arrival, General Benjamin Harrison, who later became President, personally inspected the statues before they were installed in the State House.

Since their placement, these sculptures have remained in their original locations within the rotunda. To ensure they maintain their impressive appearance, they have undergone several cleaning and restoration projects over the years. Each statue stands as a tribute to the various domains of human endeavor that have shaped our civilization, making them a significant cultural and historical treasure within the Indiana State House.
