Halemaumau Crater, Volcano Village

Halemaʻumaʻu Crater, a dramatic and dynamic volcanic feature nestled within the larger summit caldera of Kīlauea in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, is a must-see destination for any visitor to the island of Hawai'i. Known for its rich cultural significance and geological importance, Halemaʻumaʻu has long been revered in Hawaiian mythology as the home of Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes.

The crater presents a unique opportunity to witness the primal forces of nature at work. Though the dimensions of Halemaʻumaʻu can vary due to ongoing volcanic activity, it typically spans about 0.7 miles (1.1 kilometers) across and plummets approximately 300 feet (91 meters) deep. The crater floor is often the site of a lava lake, the size and activity of which fluctuate with the volcano's unrest.

Visitors can safely observe Halemaʻumaʻu from several lookout points along the rim of the Kīlauea caldera, with the Jaggar Museum and overlook offering some of the most comprehensive views and interpretative displays explaining the geology, history, and cultural significance of the area.

The landscape around Halemaʻumaʻu is constantly changing due to volcanic activity. The most recent major eruption event, which began in 2018, dramatically reshaped the crater and its surroundings. As a result, portions of the park were closed for safety reasons but have since reopened with new features, including a viewing area that offers a glimpse into the transformed caldera.

For a truly unforgettable experience, visitors are encouraged to view Halemaʻumaʻu at night when the glow from the lava lake illuminates the plume of volcanic gases, creating an otherworldly spectacle.
