USS Torsk, Baltimore
Facts and practical information
Nestled in the historic Inner Harbor of Baltimore, the USS Torsk is a storied submarine with a distinguished service record. This Tench-class submarine, which served the United States Navy with distinction during World War II, is now a floating museum open to the public.
Launched in 1944, USS Torsk was one of the last submarines to sink an enemy vessel before the end of the war. It completed two war patrols and is credited with sinking three Japanese ships. After the war, Torsk continued to serve in various capacities, including as a training vessel, before it was decommissioned in 1968.
Now docked permanently in Baltimore, the USS Torsk offers visitors a glimpse into the life of submariners during wartime. It is one of only two Tench-class submarines still open to the public and holds the record for the greatest number of dives—more than 11,000—by a U.S. Navy submarine.
The submarine is remarkably well preserved, allowing visitors to explore the torpedo rooms, crew quarters, navigation room, and control center. The tight corridors and compact living spaces vividly illustrate the cramped conditions under which the crew operated.
USS Torsk is part of the Historic Ships in Baltimore collection and contributes to the city's rich maritime heritage. It is a National Historic Landmark and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The vessel is open for tours, offering a unique educational experience for history buffs, naval enthusiasts, and families alike.
