It was originally founded by Elmer Valentine and Lou Adler, along with other celebrity investors, as a place where rock musicians and their entourage could congregate.

The Rainbow is steeped in the lore of rock 'n' roll, having been frequented by legends such as John Lennon, Keith Moon, and Alice Cooper. It's particularly famous for its association with the late guitarist Randy Rhoads, as well as being the last place where Motörhead's frontman Lemmy Kilmister was seen before his death in 2015.
