The Comedy Store
Facts and practical information
The Comedy Store is a renowned entertainment venue and a cornerstone of the American comedy scene. Located on the famous Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California, this iconic club has been a launching pad for some of the most influential comedians since it opened its doors in 1972.
Founded by comedians Sammy Shore and Rudy De Luca, The Comedy Store was originally a small comedy club within The Ciro's nightclub. However, it quickly evolved into a stand-alone venue under the ownership of Sammy Shore's then-wife, Mitzi Shore. Mitzi's vision and management turned the club into a hub for comedic talent, offering a space where both novice and seasoned comedians could hone their craft.
The Comedy Store is celebrated for its role in the careers of numerous comedy legends, including Richard Pryor, Robin Williams, David Letterman, and Jay Leno. It has three rooms – the original room, the main room, and the belly room – each with its own unique atmosphere and history of performances.
The venue has been more than just a comedy club; it has been a rite of passage for comedians aiming to make it big in Hollywood. Known for its open mic nights and its unyielding commitment to the art of stand-up comedy, The Comedy Store has been instrumental in shaping the American comedy landscape.
