Facts and practical information
The Great Pond is located in the park east of the main entrance to Ambras Castle in the city of Innsbruck. The Habsburgs created the lake at the time to provide a home for rare waterfowl.
The Aldrans stream supplies the lake with fresh water on the one hand and also drains it on the other. As a result, the lake maintains a consistently good level II water quality. The park administration fenced its shores, as the lake was often used as a bathing lake in the past, which was forbidden. The muddy lake bottom and reed areas provide food and shelter for birds.
