The ruins of Johannstein Castle are located near Sparbach in Lower Austria about eight kilometers west of Mödling at about 450 meters above sea level.

It is not certain when the castle was built. It received its name only when it was in ruins. Since 1809, its ruins and the Sparbacher Tierpark have belonged to the Liechtenstein family. In the years 1995 to 2000 a fundamental securing and restoration of the still existing masonry took place.

Today the ruin is almost completely enclosed by the surrounding forest. Access is possible only during the opening hours of the zoo.
