Kornmesserhaus, Bruck an der Mur
Facts and practical information
The Kornmesserhaus in Bruck an der Mur is considered one of the most beautiful Gothic secular buildings in Austria. It was built between 1499 and 1505 for the hammer lord Pankraz Kornmeß and its design is influenced by Venetian palaces of the time, as can be seen, for example, in the richly decorated open arcade facade.
Also the beautifully designed loggia or the coat of arms of Kornmeß, which is bricked into the wall, indicate his prosperity and far-reaching iron and arsenic trade relations. This building, which is located on Bruck's main square, is therefore often interpreted as an indication of the wealth of the bourgeoisie at the time of Maximilian I. The design of the decorative elements on the facade of the house is associated in art history with that of the west gallery of the Eisenerz parish church of St. Oswald.
From 1622 to 1629, the Kornmesserhaus was used as Bruck's town hall, and in 1792 it was severely damaged in a town fire.
